I had a chance to talk with an old friend who asked about my swimming. I explained that I have moved on to other things. He had that familiar disappointed look on his face. He said, something to the effect of, "But why! I mean you've come so far and I tell friends about you. The legend that swam the English Channel" blah blah blah. Yeah, I've heard it before.

In fact, when I quit coaching South Davis Masters a long time ago they made me a nice farewell gift and some of the comments I got were flippant and a little obnoxious. It was like I was leaving the church or something. Like I was turning my back on something sacred. That I was committing some sort of unforgivable blasphemy.

You know what? People change! People have passions that morph over time. That's what happened to me, and will continue to happen to me. One thing I know will never change, is that I will always change.

I heard this song today and it put into words this same concept that I think people should embrace, rather than shun. Give it a listen. And think about it.

If you are still swimming, and having fun doing it, wonderful. It's good to be persistent. But the last thing we should do is mindlessly and hypnotically say over in our minds like Dory from Nemo, "Just keep swimming". That is unless you intentionally want to get into that trance-like state to serve a purpose. But to do something that no longer has real meaning or value in your life is nonsensical.

Some may say, "but our relationship is built upon this common interest". True. However, there are millions of other people out there that have other interests awaiting you to join them. I've made friends from many different walks of life. Had I not picked up those new interests those friendships would never have developed into fruit.

To restrict oneself to a certain activity just to retain that circle of friends is short-sighted. Are those friendships temporary? Everything is temporary. Enjoy the moment and life at the moment. Don't resent change. New avenues open every day. Embrace that.

You can certainly look back and cherish past moments, but it shouldn't be a letdown when you realize that those relationships have faded and blown away. That shouldn't depreciate the experience you had at the time.

Keep doing what makes you happy and fulfills you.
Gordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04541143607121401766noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3252602273015137729.post-77276231975009039352021-06-21T09:32:00.004-06:002021-06-21T09:38:46.778-06:00When you're on a boat, wear a lifejacket.
If you are on a boat, you really should wear a life jacket regardless of your swimming ability. It sets a good example for people who may not be good swimmers. Besides, if for some crazy reason you end up drowning, it saves a bunch of people searching for your body.

This past weekend, the young men in our ward had a campout, and there were 3 young men that wanted to swim across Ruth Lake in the Uintahs. I didn't think that much about it, but the other leaders said no unless I swam along with them. I wasn't wearing a swimsuit, just shorts. I figured I would just go and swim in my shorts. It's a good thing I did. Two of the three boys started to hyperventilate about 1/2 way across the 100-yard length and I had to talk both of them into calming down and just floating on their back to catch their breath. If I hadn't gone, it would have been big trouble. Once across I told them to get out and walk around the shoreline instead of attempting to swim across.

I had my rescue tube with me on the previous day's swim at Butterfly Lake. But today I didn't expect to swim, so I left it at camp. If I would have had the tube it would have been a much safer experience.

The water temp I estimate was just under 70 degrees.

Thinking back I should have had them go one at a time. I had to juggle two struggling swimmers and thankfully it was such a short distance and I was able to talk them into calming down just enough to keep them out of a panic which I could see was starting to set in. They were able to float on their back and keep swimming elementary backstroke as I reminded them to "Keep your head back, relax your neck, stomach up, and don't panic."

I think the main issue was the elevation. Ruth Lake sits at 10,300 feet which is very high, especially for boys that aren't great swimmers. It was a pretty dumb idea actually, but thankfully it turned out without an incident.

Gordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04541143607121401766noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3252602273015137729.post-9189394572861795672021-04-08T13:32:00.002-06:002021-04-08T13:32:26.432-06:00Finishing the MVP SLOW Database
MVP - Minimal Viable Product, in other words, the bare minimum level of functionality.

So I finally finished working out all the major issues with the Digital Experience of the SLOW Database. Until now it wasn't an option to make it public because I didn't have enough knowledge on how to enable it for guest users.

Removing the requirement to have users login to view swim data was the biggest hurdle, then the UI, and there is still one issue I don't like. You have to click the "Related" tab when navigating the database, rather than just removing the Detail tab and having the Related tab the primary section below each Section. Regardless, I put together a quick video on the home page to demonstrate how to navigate, which includes clicking on the Related tab.

Here is the SLOW database, which includes all the records that we've been collecting over the year. The central repository for all open water swim records in Utah:

https://slow.force.com/s/

Also, this last weekend I spent the entire Saturday scrubbing the pool as it was emptying. And once completely empty, refilled with fresh water. This is the first time I've emptied it 100% since getting it two years ago. It's as clean as day 1, and I've enjoyed swimming in it a little more now:

I've tried using Bluetooth technology underwater and it doesn't work. Not even cell coverage with full bars above water can penetrate 2 feet of water. But I found out that ZYGO is using FM wavelength and that it is able to broadcast just enough to go through a couple feet of water.

The package came yesterday and here's what it comes with:

1 Zygo headset

1 Zygo Bluetooth receiver/FM Transmitter

1 pair of earplugs

1 charging cable

1 hard shell stow bag which also acts as a dual charger for both headset and transmitter

The claim is that it will go up to 2 feet below the surface if the transmitter is on the pool deck. In my case, I want the transmitter underwater in a waterproof container along with the tablet I have anchored at the bottom of the 3-foot depth endless pool. That way I can watch a movie that is downloaded on the tablet, and hear the movie instead of just read subtitles.

I've tried the swimMP3 before and was greatly unimpressed with the sound quality. These really aren't much better. The sound doesn't go in your ears using air obviously. The little "speakers" rest on your cheekbones and use vibration to allow you to hear. You'll never get the kind of audio quality that you would get from Bose headphones by any means! But it's loud enough for you to hear. And even when cranked up, when you take them off, the vibration doesn't go through the air like a speaker, so you don't need to worry about bugging any friends you might be swimming with. But the audio quality is a lot like listening to an AM Radio when I was a kid. Crackly and muffled, but it's better than nothing.

Until someone can invent biotech that enables connecting audio directly to the brain, I don't think you'll be able to get much better, given the limitations of physics and the human body.

Anyway, my test of playing a movie and listening/watching it while I swim, was a success. What movie did I watch? On a Clear Day My favorite swimming movie of all time. I noticed that the transmitter has a button on the side where you can press it and speak into the transmitter like a walkie talkie and that is actually very clear. Much clearer than the audio from any music or movie that you might be playing. So if you are a coach and want to give feedback to a swimmer that is wearing the headset, you can do so while they swim, and hopefully, if you speak clearly they can understand you.

Here's my video review:

Is it worth $300? Well, that depends on how well it lasts, and time will tell. If I can get 400 days out of this, I will call it a good purchase. I will track along with my yardage whether I used Zygo or not so I can track the number of workouts used with it.

So far I'd give it an 8 out of 10. I hesitate to give it a 10 because bone conduction technology is just so inferior to traditional high-quality headphones, which you can't use underwater. It's definitely superior to the swimMP3 though.
Gordshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04541143607121401766noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3252602273015137729.post-27164095171457328282021-01-18T18:14:00.003-07:002021-01-18T18:14:41.927-07:005000 total pool miles
Today I passed the 5,000 logged pool miles (including endless pool) not counting open water miles.

Got in a two hour, 8,000 yard endless pool swim today. Watched the entire movie of Jaws on my tablet which was weighed down at the bottom of the pool. Captions were on and it made the swim go by faster. Why? It is the date that Matthew Webb swam the English Channel on 24 Aug 1875.

In celebration of the day I just bettered my PR for the most time swam in the endless pool for a single workout. Swam over 12,000 yards in 3 hours. It was a good workout. 5 sets of 36 minutes with a minute for a quick drink in between. Odd sets swimming intervals, then even sets pulling intervals.

The world wouldn't be the same for me without one where a swim such as this hasn't been turned into such a legacy event.

It's been 9 years since I last swam the 10 mile DC Race. Sam slept in his hammock and Oliver on a cot under the stars.

I misread the email. I saw that checkin started at 6:30, so I set my alarm for 5:30 so we could get up, break camp and get the Sea Doo in the water. I got checked in at 6:30 and was ready to swim at 7. There were only about 10 people there at that time and I was really confused, as I was already greased up, with my cap and goggles on, ready to go. I got out of the water back up to where Jim and Connie were still checking people in. I overheard him answer someone's question about start time. He said 8 oclock.

Oh my gosh I was an hour early! So I got some sweats on instead of just wading in the water for an hour. It was good though to notice that the water temp was actually warmer than the air temp. It felt awesome.

At 8 am we got started. Apparently I was the only 10 mile swimmer for today. Didn't matter to me. I am really doing this just as a milestone for this year, not to place or compete really. Except to maybe compete against previous years, which to be honest just wasn't going to happen. I was shooting for a low 5 hour time.

When I started I kinda went out too fast cause everyone was watching, and I didn't want to look like the big white whale that I resemble. Everything felt just OK, no issues. I noticed someone pass me just as I got to the 1 mile turnaround (.5 miles in). What the heck? If they started 10 minutes apart, that meant that he swam that 1/2 mile in 5 minutes. I think that would be a world record :)

The water level of the reservoir was quite a bit lower than last year when I swam the 5K. So the turn around at the end of Wallsburg bay was significantly closer than last year. Which I like. That is one heck of a bay.

When I got to the 5K turn around about 6 swimmers had already passed me. And once I got out of the bay and around the corner the 10K buoy seemed to be closer than the 5K turnaround. Once you get out of the bay, the wake and wind sure picks up and makes for less than pleasant conditions. When we got into the next bay I yelled out to Cathi to go to the "cigarette buoys" (no wake buoys). After which she noticed a big orange buoy at the beach and yelled out to me "There is the turn around!". In my mind I was like "Yeah, I wish!". When we got there she turned around and was ready to head back. I noticed the buoy said in big bold lettering "Keep Going". Haha. Even Cathi was wishing it was time to head back. So we kept going along the shoreline to the next bay. Man I was struggling. I was feeling sluggish and my arms hurt. I was having second thoughts about my abilities, but I kept going on as best as I could.

Soon Chad came along in his boat and I noticed Oli and Sam were there. They're long, and boat wakes just keep on coming and I feel almost like I'm swimming upstream. At the 10 mile turnaround I was glad to finally be on the second half!

I had Cathi give me feeds every 40 minutes. The feeds consisted of various items: Flavored milk, Gatorade, yogurt. I should have packed more solid items, like a sandwich or some nutrigrain bars. But regardless, once I got back to Wallsburg Bay, I said a prayer and Bam! I hit a second wind and I was able to really feel stronger, with much more efficient swimming. It was also nice to have smoother waters. Although it was crowded with fishermen on boats. The final swim in the bay seemed to go much quicker and I felt great.

In the video, Cathi refers to the 10K turnaround. That's on the way back. But it was gone. She was cheering me on the whole way, and especially at the end. I was pouring it on the last mile especially. My shoulders were feeling good and I felt strong. I swam around the final corner at the boat ramp and the buoy was gone, but I swam to the shallow water I could sit down. I wasn't about to go under the inflatable finish arch cause of the many rocks. In years past all you had to do was hit the buoy with your hand. I just think they were antsy to go home and took it our early. I stopped my stop watch at the point of stopping, and it read 5:21. Official time: 5:21:25 So I was about 30 minutes slower than 2011. I had a vision of the pool being in the back yard inside of a greenhouse type structure with huge windows overhead as the roof, and huge sliding doors along the outside. Basically a see through house structure around it. Inside next to the Endless pool would be the hot tub.

Looking into the costs for such an endeavor I estimated would be

You can see the pre work for the pool
pad behind the tree which Isaac
was removing Jacob's pathetic
attempt at a treehouse.

around $40,000. I did test swims of pools that blew bubbles at you and they sucked. I could swim breast stroke at the level of their fastest speed. They come with a tether for you to attach yourself to. In 2016, I went to do test swim at a pool in Kaysville and he had the thing going full blast, and I was able to keep up with it. So I wanted a pool that I would not even be able to hang with. We found the model we wanted that was affordable. We got a deal because it was a demo at the State Park and they gave us a discount. The cool thing is we could choose what jet packs we want. The neat thing about bullfrog is that you can pick and choose these jet packs in each corner. They remove and go in within seconds. Each jet pack has unique features. We ordered the hot tub and within a month they came in and installed it. They suggested an electrician that has lots of experience with installing the electrical needed for the hot tub, and they said he could also do the electrical for the pool at the same time and save some money.

Electrical Work

After the Bullfrog purchase, which would take about a month to get delivered, we got a head start on getting the electrical work done. That involved a licensed electrician who does this kind of thing, and he wired us for both the hot tub and endless pool from the main. His name is Dave Warner, and he did a very quality job! It involved not only getting the new wiring through the house to the back, but to shut off boxes to the back outside wall, and then underground over to the concrete pad. The pictures above show the yard before the concrete work that was done.

Our panel didn't have enough slots for him so he had to install additional slots to accommodate the two 220 slots for the pool and hot tub, and moved things around in the breaker box.

Then had to fish the wire through the ceiling in the basement thru the brick wall in the back under the back stairs. It all came in labeled boxes which was good, but the base of the shipment was lopsided and the pallets all broken up. Whoever prepared the base of the shipment was new or didn't know what they were doing because there was a great deal of weight that wasn't on a pallet at all, and the base board broke. There was only one pallet with the entire shipment balancing on that one pallet.

Fortunately the only damage I found was to one of the corner underwater panels. The follow up with Endless Pools however was very good. There was a small part that was broken and they sent me a whole new corner assembly which wasn't really necessary, but definitely fixed the issue.

Endless Pool self install - Started mid March 2019

Shortly after getting everything organized, I watched the video and read the installation manual. I'll tell you, this is why I am not a mechanic. I must have read and reread several portions before I got it. So I installed the steel walls and that took several hours. There are 6 large 7x48" panels that you have to put together just right. I actually installed the fatter end down, which after setting it up, realized the fatter end is at the top. So I had to move everything around. What a pain!

I then used the supplied drill hole to drill the holes in the walls for the lights and the hydraulic hoses. At this point I was supposed to start putting the coping in at the top. Not much instructions there at all. At this point I realized I was in way over my head.

Endless Pool Professional installation continuation - late March 2019

I called Dave Christensen a professional and trained Endless Pools installer, who is located in Salt Lake. I was desperate for his help. He came up and took a look at my customizations and what I had done so far. He said that he could get the rest of it installed (minus the insulation and skirting install, which he suggested I do if I wanted to save money) for $2500. I was like "Heck yeah!". I guarantee I would have broke something or installed it wrong so I was very glad to hand it over to him. I took some time lapse video of his work from that point on.

These cost about 5.00 each and were VERY heavy. I had to make many trips to get the 2+ pallets worth of pavers to my home. Each one is over 40 pounds. They are over 2 inches thick and 16"x16". The concrete pad only allows for about 18 inches of concrete beyond the outline of the pool/hot tub base. I realized there would be some water splashing and so I figured I needed another 3 feet or so of pavers to keep the chlorinated water off the grass. This also included some gravel and sand from Travis Call. The gravel and sand base enables the pavers from moving around and giving any water between the cracks some drainage.

Sprinkler System - late July 2019

Travis' brother Justin gave us a plan and estimate for the sprinkler system.

Justin and his uncle worked many afternoons getting this work done. So I looked online for carports and other tent structures to cover the pool. I talked to a friend of mine, Theron Watson, who owns Olympus Fireworks. He said he had many used tents and that he'd give me a good deal on one. I took him up on it. He had a 15'x30' tent he'd sell me with walls for $500. That was a great price. That would cover the pad well enough.

The kids really worked hard helping me wheelbarrow all that gravel and sand over and spread it out, and then help me lay the pavers. That was hard work. I bought twice as much sand as I needed so I gave the rest away on KSL Classifieds.

The delivery of the tent took forever. It took many calls and texts to him to get his crew to come out and deliver it. Then when it got here I realized there were some missing parts which I was able to get resolved fairly quickly. I got the tent up and noticed that the water temp was no longer increasing. But it wasn't really going down either.

So I went to Smith's and bought 80 pounds of ice. I dumped it all in and watched it all melt in a matter of minutes. The water temp dropped only 1 degree! I can't afford ice for that kind of effect. So I did some googling and found that the number one way to cool down pool water in the summer is with a waterfall. So I rigged up my pump and hose to the tent poles and setup a waterfall system. I even put in a fan to blow air through the dripping water. The water temp dropped down over 10 degrees! Wow! That worked awesomely!

You would think that they were making them in China still. It took me months of nagging and pestering until I got the walls. Man that really was way too hard to get the tent and the walls finally here and installed. But once I got them up, it was a life saver for the pool to keep operating throughout the winter.

Throughout the winter I kept the water temperature at around 68 degrees. Which on a hot summer day would feel quite refreshing, but in winter when the air temps are down into the 20s, this made getting in a bit of a mental challenge. But with open water swimming, you need to get used to cold water and the overcoming mental and physical challenges, so I saw this as an opportunity. I kept an eye on my Sense energy monitor I have hooked up to my electrical system. This enables me to know in real time my electrical usage and the AI built into the app is able to not only identify the appliance types in use, but allow me to setup notifications when certain appliances turn on/off.

I found that over the span of several weeks in the middle of winter that the heater for the endless pool was going on approximately 4-5 times per night for 15 minutes each session to maintain the 68 degree temperature. The usage for the heater was about 300-400 watts. So that equates to less than 1 kwh per night! That's awesome. My hot tub was only slightly over that. Keeping in mind the hot tub is leaking heat into the inside of the tent which kept the internal tent temperature about 10 degrees warmer than the outside. So heating the endless pool for one day in the winter was probably about 10 cents. Just to be conservative, let's say a quarter. I can totally handle that.

Swimming in the winter though was nice, cause I'd get in my swim and at the end the hot tub soak just felt awesome.

I installed an Amazon Alexa device to the top of the inside of the tent so I could relax in the hot tub, tell Alexa to play some music, and then tell her to turn off the lights which I had connected to a smart plug.

Pool Maintenance

Owning a pool means that chlorine smell. The pool where I did my test swim in Kaysville, the guy had his pool inside his house. I could smell chlorine as soon as I walked into his house. Not a bad thing for me, I like the smell. But I didn't want visitors to have to deal with that. One of the reasons I have mine outside.

Anyway I found that with both the Hot Tub and the Endless Pool, I go through about 5 pounds of chlorine in about 3 months or so. So I buy my chlorine from Amazon in bulk. $100 per pop. However part of keeping it clean is vacuuming. I ended up getting a Dolphin E10 above ground vacuum, which for the size of the pool is overkill in a big way, but I love the convenience of turning it on and letting it just go.

I also found that I need to rinse the filter every week. I only replace the filter probably twice a year, which I also get on Amazon. In the summer I have to put water in from the hose for about 10 minutes every couple weeks. With the waterfall and the front half of the pool uncovered I lose water to evaporation and a little bit of splashing while swimming.

Other than that, the pool maintenance is a total breeze. Just make sure you have the pump system configured to keep pumping and filtering. I had originally configured it to only run the pump and filter when it was heating, and in the summer it wasn't actually filtering properly. So I had to break out the owners manual and program the system to filter to my specifications (which is 20 hours per day). Don't worry. The pump is a tiny little motor that only uses about 150w (when the heat is off).

Sharing the Endless Pool with "drowning" fish during Covid-19 hype

During the spring of 2020, recreation centers and community pools all over the country were shutting down, including here in Utah. Many of my friends at the South Davis Rec center were out of the water and it was still too early in the season for them to do open water swimming. So I opened up the pool to them via Salt Lake Open Water. The only price: $25 to join SLOW.

I realized I couldn't charge them for personal gain otherwise Syracuse City would come after me for proof of insurance, or for a business license. SLOW is a non-profit and it was my way of supporting the swimming community. So we got about 15 swimmers from all over that were dying to swim and they had access to a google calendar where they could reserve time to swim. Needless to say there were days the pool was almost running non-stop. I calculated the cost of running the pool using the Sense Home Energy Monitor I already had installed. I found that running the pool at a normal speed consumed a little over 3kw. If I pay 9 cents per kwh, then each 1 hr swim would cost me about 30 cents or so. That's not bad. I can handle that. With that information I didn't charge anyone a penny more than the $25 to join SLOW as members.

That made many people happy for the 2+ months that our wonderful Utah governor had everyone on lockdown. This morning Cathi and I loaded up the Seadoo and got to the Bear Lake Marina at 6:30. This time I remembered the grease (which also included zinc oxide). Got greased up and left the shore just after 7:15am.

The prep for today’s swim included several things which I hoped would improve my time:

wearing a cap

wearing a proper speedo instead of a drag suit

full body shave.

Magnesium and Potassium supplements leading up to the swim.

Wearing channel grease.

The water recorded on the Seadoo came up as 68 degrees and the water felt great!

The first hour I was feeling sluggish and intentionally went a little slower so I could pace myself. After the second feed, I picked it up.

Cathi was the perfect support and pilot. I had Cisco beach navigation enabled on the Garmin and it was keeping her in line along to get straight to cisco beach and constantly reported the estimated time of arrival. She was so upbeat and cheerful. The feeds went much faster and were shorter than last time.

The downside to the swim was that I misplaced my goggle box in the packing for the trip, and left it at home. I was nearing panic as I searched for placing it could be in the car. Fortunately I had an extra pair in my glove box and an extra set of ear plugs in my wallet. Problem was that these goggles were pretty old and fogged up constantly. I could barely make out her profile from 10 feet away. But it worked out. I just kept the sun to my 11 o’clock as it came up over the mountain.

At my 6th feed she said that I was on target for a sub 4 hour swim if I kept it up! That was
encouraging and I made sure to really keep my stroke count high and reaching forward to maximize each and every stroke. I've seen some swims where the swimmer in their fatigue robs themselves of several inches per stroke due to lack of extension, and proper hand entry. Multiply thousands of stroke by several inches and that adds up to a slower swim, which equates to more time in the water, and increasing that fatigue even more.

I made sure not to look forward until I saw rocks underneath me. Meaning I was only 50 feet away. When I got to the point where I could stand, I made sure to just keep crawling as far as I could. Then I only had two feet of rocks to navigate to get to dry ground. As soon as I cleared the water I stopped my watch and it read 3:45:07.

So excited with that time. That’s very reassuring to get a time that is about 40 minutes faster than last time.

Thanks Cathi!!!
Day after:
Saturday, July 18th, 2020

The official race was today. My shoulders are feeling awesome. It's such a confidence boost to swim hard and finish strong and still have energy to have kept going. Deer Creek race 10 mile should be a good next step.

There were about 8-10 people registered (including relay teams) for today's 10k. It was really good conditions, and everyone finished without incident. Jim joined Chad on his boat along with Mark. It was so fun being out on the water on the Seadoo. Had a ton of fun.

Sam, Oliver, Jack (my English Setter) and I jumped on the Sea Doo at Rainbow Cove Boat ramp and jetted over to the Garden City Marina pavilion/beach at 10am.
I pointed out the "nipple" to the boys and off we went. I felt on the verge of cramping several times throughout the first hour of the swim, but avoided a full on charlie horse by kicking gently through it.

I took feeds on these intervals (35, 1:10, 1:45, 2:20, 3:50, 4:10). There were several things learned from this swim:

Just because you swim approximately 2 mph in an endless pool doesn't equate to that in open water. (I was expecting a 3:15 finish)

If you take two people on the boat, one to drive, and the other should have the feed ready, instead of searching the cooler, for something. As soon as I stop it should be ready to go.

Putting on waterproof sunscreen at the start, even though it says 90 minutes of protection. It really means just that. After that, you're gonna burn like a raisin.

DO NOT forget channel grease. Chafing simply sucks! It's no fun swimming when every other stroke you feel a burning sensation from your right shoulder.

DO NOT look up near the finish wondering how much further. I should know better than this, but I was concerned once I got to 3:30 and still wasn't done.

Spot GPS Track

Then I made the mistake of counting strokes. Once I got to 1,200 I was getting super frustrated. I quit counting, and did some backstroke, and getting discouraged. I took a feed at 4:10 hoping it would be my last one. I noticed the shore looked like we were about 500 yards away so I said to myself, don't look anymore until you can for sure see the bottom.

4:21:58

Once I got to where I could see the bottom was about 6 feet deep I told Oliver and Sam to just hang out at that point as I didn't want the Sea Doo's bottom to hit rocks. So I carefully crawled in as far as I could, and then climbed out. I stopped at 4:21:58

Definitely a disappointing time. More than an hour over my goal time. I've never been so far off before. Now I know what to expect for the race in two weeks. I will shoot for a 4:20 time and know that I can definitely achieve on that if the conditions aren't terrible. It was actually very good conditions throughout the swim. I can't complain at all.

We went back to the van and got the kneeboard and let the boys have some fun on the water. But they didn't last long. They were done and not super enthusiastic about spending any more time on the water. Jack did well and watched patiently.

We went to the cabin and enjoyed our evening with the fam.

Next swim in two weeks: July 18th

Then I'm hoping to do a double on Labor Day.

Her son, Zeke has Down Syndrome, which is due to a third 21st chromosone, thus the theme "3.2.1 pledge":

https://321pledge.org

The money for this goes to various individuals with Down Syndrome to help get them through school, and to help them reach their dreams of full potential living with Down Syndrome.

I donated 3 x $21 to this organization and pledge to swim 3 x 3.21Km workouts before the end of this week in a nod of respect to this organization.
The water temp was 37 degrees F. It was raining a little and we had a winter storm the night before so it was nice to have some snow on the ground for the swim. Olga came and brought a friend. Jim was visiting family but kept me updated with his own cold water adventures.

Cathi was making fun of me for being "6 eyes" with my goggles, glasses on at the same time.

It was raining slightly so I wanted to get it done so Cathi didn't have to just stand there in the rain, so our entry was relatively quick.
It amazes me how the average person is close minded to the idea. We are so engrained to protect ourselves, thinking that is accomplished by avoiding pain, or activities that stretch us beyond our limited imagination.

Most people have the ability, but very very few have the mindset to even try it. And when asked questions about it, it's difficult to convey the feelings of participating in winter swimming.

To them it may seem sick, or disturbing. But when the time is right and they participate under the right conditions, it is amazing and wonderful. So until you've tried it, you're just a scared little kid unable or unwilling to comprehend.

This year, I decided to invite Sam to join me in the weekly swims early in the year. And he has come every week without hesitation. Here are the winter swimming stats so far:
Last Saturday, 12/14/19 I put in 2.5 hours of endless pool swimming and got in 10,600 yards (6 miles). For a new PR in the endless. I did it in sets of 4 x 40 mins with a 10 minute warm down. Ended up being 10,600 yards. Sweet!

And yesterday's open water swim in the GSL was 44 degrees F! Sam went with me and we both swam from the boat ramp to the outside of the marina opening and back. About 7 minutes. Sam swam waterpolo style the whole way. Something you can get away with in the GSL.

Jim came too and got in and was in the water longer than we were.
1) Power - I have a high performance Endless Pool. There are four models with varying power. The model I went with is the second best with a maximum current of :56/100 yard. The pool I did my test swim in prior to my purchase was an "Original" model, which is the lowest pool in terms of power. I was able to swim at its maximum speed without much issue. (1:05/100 yd pace).

The High Performance model is more than enough for my needs. In fact, my workouts are for distance rather than speed, so to be honest I rarely include 1:05 pace in my workout, although its nice to have the option to be able to train a sprinter in my pool, should the need arise.

2) Controls - the pool is controlled either manually through a remote control, or using an app that can be run on your phone/tablet, called Fit@Home. This is actually an "extra" that you have to buy. It cost me an additional $400, and worth every penny. The app allows me to program a workout with up to 20 different sets, for controlling speed & duration, and do intervals. The app keeps track of the distance of your workout so you can know relatively accurately how far your actual distance was. Otherwise manually controlling this with the remote, would be extremely boring and you wouldn't be able to get the overall distance. You do have to be on a wireless network for this to work, so while you don't necessarily need internet access, you do need to be on the same wireless network with your phone, that your pool is connected to.

In addition to the current flow control, I got the add-on for controlling the temperature remotely using a different app on my phone. The app is called in.touch 2. Although I don't really mess with the temperature, it does allow me to turn the underwater lights on through the app (which I rarely use), as well as monitor whether the pump/heater are currently being used. This add-on cost an extra $295, which I would say is unnecessary. It's neat, but not really worth the money IMO. If you intend to increase/decrease the temperature for different swimmers often, maybe. But the time it takes to increase/decrease the temperature would take too long for it to be useful. It takes many hours for temp to increase/decrease depending on how cold/hot the air temp is. And the water temp can't be decreased mechanically, only heated. The only way the water temp can decrease is if the air temperature is lower than the desired water temperature.

In my case, I keep the water temperature at 70 degrees F at all times! This is too cold for any of my non-competitive swimming family members. In the summer, I couldn't get the water temp this low in my back yard. Being exposed to the sun, in the early summer was making the water temp rise way up to 85+ and that was totally unacceptable. I bought a large 15x30 tent to shade the pool (and the hot tub), but even in the shade it wasn't dropping below 85 degrees.

I was desperate. I went to the grocery store and bought 80 pounds of ice. That only dropped the temp by 1 degree! I did some homework on the topic, and read that the most impactful thing I could do to lower the water temperature was to build a waterfall system, to aerate the water. So I rigged a pump system using a submersible 1/2 HP water pump. This is the same pump I use to empty the pool. It is supposed to empty 2000 Gallons per hour which is way too fast for my waterfall. So I hooked up the pump to this Variable Speed Controller which would allow me to control the amount of water the pump would output.

I connected the pump to a hose and connected it to the tent legs leading to the top of the inside of the tent so the water would fall down right back into the pool. Then I placed it near the front of the pool, so I could cover it, except for the 3 feet of exposure for the pool water to pump out, and back in. I had a powerful fan also flowing through the air into the stream of water to increase the air flow going into the water.

This worked fantastic! I was able to maintain a water temp of 73-74 in the middle of summer where the temps reached over 100 degrees. In the early fall I was able to uninstall this waterfall system easily and the air temperature outside was low enough to not require any heating.

Update (April 18, 2020)

I noticed while swimming that the current was spontaneously getting faster, then slower, then turn off. I was worried something was seriously wrong with the computer running the system. I was brainstorming the issue then thought I should check the manual controller which was in a waterproof box on the table with the swim gear.

I unscrewed the back of the manual control and the entire thing was totally corroded from water damage. I removed the two corroded batteries from the controller, and then the pool operated like normal. Whew! I never use the manual control, so no big deal. But you'd think a control to a pool would be fairly waterproof. Not so.

Also, over the past month, I've opened up the pool to Salt Lake Open Water (SLOW) Club members who want to still swim while the Covid-19 pandemic is happening. Community pools are closed. With the endless pool being outside, accessible through a side gate, it seemed like a good way to help people that still want to get in a swim. So the pool was made available for reservations, and typically gets 5-6 swimmers per day at about an hour each. Lots of use!

Swimming during winter with the tent walls
installed.

I was looking at the electrical costs. I have a Sense electricity monitor, so I was wondering what the costs are with running and heating this pool. I found that depending on the speed of the current, the usage ranges from 2-4kph. My average kph cost is about 9 cents. So when 3 different swimmers swim for one hour it will cost me about $1.00 for electricity.

Heating is about 400 watts when it is on. In the summertime, that is not at all. In the wintertime, according to Sense, the heater kicked on 4 times at night for about 15 minutes each. I didn't check the monitor for heating during the day, but to be conservative let's say the heater goes on for 2 hours a day. That's still less than 10 cents a day to heat in the winter months.

Granted I kept the pool in an enclosed tent throughout the winter to keep the wind chill out. The temps were about 10 degrees warmer in the tent than outside air with the hot tub also being in there.

Better late than never. It would be tragic for someone's last thought to be prior to dying "I wish I learned how to swim". Yet that's what thousands of people in the United States are likely to think as they take their last breath prior to sinking under the water helpless. There are a significant number of local news stories that cover drowning in Utah.

I had a friend from work gree me in the elevator and say how I inspired her to sign up for an adult swimming lesson at her local pool.

That made my day hearing her tell me that.

I've been able to help several adults in the few months that I've had my endless pool. Giving them a chance to come over and learn a little technique to make swimming easier. They learn that swimming is a step by step process. You can't learn the basics in just one or two visits. It takes dedication to consistent practice and learning as skills improve. Just like learning how to play an instrument. It requires practice. But unlike learning how to play an instrument, knowing how to survive in water could be a life saving skill in an emergency.

If this applies to you, take that first step. It would be a real shame to have that that last thought be, "Man if only I would have learned how to swim!" Let me know if you want help. I'm willing to give support free of charge.
Sam, Cathi and I drove to the Bear Lake Marina just north of Garden city, and got prepared for our 7:30am departure. I had reached out to Gustavo a month earlier informing him of my intention to do the crossing on Labor Day with Sam. He agreed to do an attempt as well that day. He wanted to get his Utah Triple Crown this year and the Bear Lake swim this year involved some weather conditions that required pulling some swimmers.

So today's swim was another change at getting that UTC for him. He had a couple of kayakers join him for safety. There was a concern that there would be a huge number of boaters out on the lake. I knew we'd be OK starting early and getting to the east side earlier in the day. (I've done three major swims in Bear Lake on Labor Day).

We started at 7:33am and the water felt awesome. Sam and I got a great pace going and Cathi was doing well as our kayaker. Sam and I swam side by side with Cathi on the outside.

At the first feed I was in good spirits and asked Sam to toast our first drink together out on the lake. I tried to make this a fun event for Sam and Cathi and yelled out at the end of our feed "On to the nipple!" Referencing the peak that we often point swimmers to on the east side that gets them close to the position they need to aim for. Once they get halfway, there is some adjustments to the landscape references for the finish at Cisco Beach Campground entrance.
Once we got in the middle of the lake and beyond, the water was almost glassy with how smooth it was. At the 3rd feed I told Sam, next time we take a feed we'll be more than halfway.

The feeds we took today consisted of the following:

Sliced Peaches ( This is Sam's idea, and it was awesome! I think I ate more peach slices than he did)

flavored milk from Gossners in Logan (Banana and Strawberry milk) This is a treat that I should have discovered long ago. I used to get terrible heartburn during swims, and flavored milk would have kept that under control, but I had to endure it. I'm going to definitely keep this one on my go-to list of feed items!

Once we got the 4th feed I noticed Sam having a harder time to stay right at my 9 o clock. I told him he needed to eat more peaches and get some energy in his body. But each 30 minute session after that progressively got slower for him and I could see him shivering a little during our feed breaks. The 7th feed he cramped up pretty good and I asked him to relax the muscle and stretch it. Once that feed was over, I think he was really angry and he took off! I had a hard time keeping up with him. After about 5 minutes he slowed back down, and continued his slower pace. He was getting tired, but fortunately we were about a mile from shore. Cathi took some video of the finish:

Sam was pretty beat and shivering. Isaac carried him to the car to warm up. I got dressed and helped load the kayak onto the trailer. Once we got all loaded up and ready to go, Gustavo completed his crossing. He completed it in 4:24.

We took a minute and took some pictures and finished out mid-day with everyone in smiles.

I asked Sam on a scale from 1-10 what this was as being the hardest thing he's ever done in his life. He said "9".

I'm so proud of that kid. As far as I can tell from the results of the swims of width crossings, Sam is the youngest person to do it (14 years 2 months 9 days)

Next year we're shooting for an Anacapa crossing.

On Friday evening I met Chad at the 155th Ave Station and went to his BnB he was renting for his family and spent the night.

At 5am we left in a Uber for the southern end of the island with his Mom, Diane. We met up with Josh and got ready to go. The field consisted of approximately 18 people, with about 4 waves of 4 people starting with the slowest swimmers first.

They started at Pier A, only a short distance further south than where I started my MIMS swim. The weather was a little cloudy at the start, but after a couple hours it was all sun, and hot! I did my swim mid June. Mid August is way hotter. The water temp was in the mid 70's rather than the upper 60s and that's a big difference for someone swimming distance.

Chad swam primarily to the right and there were quite a bit of things to see on the left side. I hope he was able to enjoy as much as he could. He ran hard into a toolbox that was floating. At the time Josh and I thought it was like a briefcase or something.

He passed up all the other swimmers in his group and those in the first wave. Josh and I were unable to pace swim for him until the upper Harlem, or Hudson. We both agreed to wait until Hudson, because we could only swim for an hour total. So when we got to the Hudson he swam the first 30 minutes, and I relieved him and swam for the remaining 30 minutes. The water going from Harlem into Hudson wasn't near as choppy as my swim.

About halfway down the Hudson the chop picked up and the wind came towards him kicking up the water. He was enjoying the Hudson about as much as I did. A bit annoying with the rough conditions. The water to me tasted the same as when I did it. Like diluted diesel fuel. It was a fun experience to relive.

Chad's family was waiting with a huge sign for him at Pier 25 and it was awesome to see.

The entire time I kept Chad's family and friends updated with pictures and video. It was really neat to see the amount of support he was getting. He was swimming strong and once he saw the huge cruise ship inside of North Cove he was psyched and knew he only had a few hundred yards left to get back to Pier A to finish.

Chad finished in 9:15:56, and is now noted in the list of Utah Superstar Swims as the 3rd Utahn to swim the Triple Crown. Way to go Chad, all open water swimmers in Utah are inspired by your dedication and resolve!

See the above video for tons of pics and video of the swim.
Sam, Oliver and I prepared this past month to participate in this race. Oliver on Thursday night was with our family at a wedding reception where there was a group of kids dancing up on a stage. Well the kids all went up there and did their goofy fortnite dancing. The water was warm (mid to high 70s), but not so warm that it was detrimental to my performance. When they started us off I started my watch and swam hard. I got into a groove and while a couple people passed me within the first mile, I was determined to stay in there and just keep a good maintainable, but quick pace.

At the turnaround point I saw Cathi and Oliver a couple minute back is all and Sam was doing well. Lucy was in her whitewater kayak and practicing some moves. I saw her completely upside down at one point and she flipped back over. She sure loves adventure. I saw the 1/2 mile buoy from the finish and at this point didn't take a drink and didn't event know what my time was at that point, but I figured I better take something if I wanted a sprint finish. So I yelled out to Lucy, "Drink" and she threw out my water bottle.
Stop was about 20 seconds and I was off. I wanted to really come in strong. The entire time on my swim I recognized that the difference in speed for me wasn't stroke rate. It was about extending my stroke and focusing on two things:

Good Body roll

A really good extension, and a good catch.

Well that philosophy really paid off. I ended up with a new PR. My last 5K race was back in 200 (11 years really?), and was a 1:23:16.

This morning I got a 1:15:07 Chad was right on my tail, shortly followed by Sam. Sam got 1:21:31. Which still was faster than my previous PR. That kid is going to be awesome over the next few years. I asked him if he is sore or what, and he wasn't. I'm thinking we totally could have done the 10K. Not at that pace, but it would have been good. So we have exciting fall/winter training plans. Next year is going to be great!

What a great day>Thanks to Lucy, Cathi and Oliver as the support crew. And especially to Jim and Connie for always organizing such an awesome race.

Chad Starks, on Saturday August 17th will attempt to swim the 28.5 miles around Manhattan Island. Up the East River, Harlem River, and then down the Hudson river back to the starting point at the south end of the island.

This will be the final leg in the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming! To help him feel of the love and support of all those who want to see him finish this thing, I am organizing a "Guess Chad's time" event. You can submit how long you think it will take for him to complete this swim, and if you are the closest person, I'll send you via email a $50 giftcard to Swimoutlet.com where you can buy a few goggles or a swimsuit. Whatever you want.

This swim, is my #1 rated most favorite swim of all time! You can read the details of my own experience of this swim here.

You can submit your words of support and your guess to this form:
No going outside of that perimeter until Friday at midday, when the aquatics team would organize a mile swim.
The turn around float was actually below the surface so if you want to know where to turn around, you better be right there next to the rope to see it. The course was 5 laps of 200+ yards which makes this a little more than a mile.

I told Sam to stay right on my tail the whole time as we would be weaving and out of scouts. There were probably 60 swimmers total. Most of them swimming sidestroke, backstroke and some breaststroke. After the first lap the field was dispersed pretty well and we were able to get into a rhythm. At the 3rd lap I saw Sam right on my tail as directed. At the 2nd half of the 4th lap he swam along side me, and then picked it up as we approached the finish. The last 100 yards he was full out sprinting. And I was struggling to keep up with him. He out-touched me by 2 seconds.

Which also confirms to me that this is actually more than a mile. We swam this just about as fast as Bear Lake, and the finish time should have been closer to 30 minutes even. The water felt like it was probably 67ish. It was a little chilly at first, ("freezing" according to the scouts), but after going it was totally fine.

The water here was quite a bit cooler. I would estimate in the high 50s or even 60 degrees even. I really need to get a thermometer for my goggle box. Its only a 1/2 mile hike from the parking lot. I had my swimmer buddy board with me. Sam and I got in and swam across to the other side where there was a huge slope full of snow. I got out and did a snow angle in the ice and then got back in and we swam back. I had to remind Sam to put his face in the water. Great idea. I got Sam his own Safe Swim Buoy. He was shivering before we even got in the water. The air temp was a little cool for him at 5:45am when we started. I used the aquasphere goggles that I got from endless pools. They're like a diving mask almost and it was tough for me to get a seal. It took about 4 times during the first quarter mile to clear water out and attempt to reseal. I finally got it after I tied a knot in the strap to force it to stay put. I'll probably not use the goggles anymore for training. Too much fiddling with them to stay sealed. 1.22 miles and felt good.

I have never participated in this race as a swimmer in the past. Mostly as a director or paddler. I arrived early to help setup the buoys with Chad and help with Josh at check-in.
My friend from work, Angela came to help paddle for the 1 mile section, and I had another boat that I originally was going to paddle, but realized I really should be in the water. So I found a dad for a young swimmer that was willing to take my place as a paddler.
The water was pretty cool getting in and I wanted the boys to experience a cold open water swim as a measure of what they should expect on Saturday. They were doing so well! Sam was keeping up with me no problem. At that point I realized I needed to show him how to draft and demonstrate the advantage that it is for an open water swimmer where drafting is legal.

At that point I decided I would do the one mile race as well. We started that morning and Sam kept up with me the whole time. I noticed that every time I would sight that I was already in line with the buoys that I was shooting for. So my stroke is pretty good as far as swimming straight.

Oliver swam the 1/2 mile, and Sam and I swam the mile. There were several swimmers who "cut the line" to the proper buoys and shaved off some of the distance. But to me, it's not about winning the race, but about getting the full distance in a time that meets or exceeds my pre-set expectations.

The goals we agreed upon:

Oliver - 1/2 mile in under 20 minutes

Me and Sam - 1 mile in under 30 minutes

We all made our goal and felt great about it. Oliver got 18:56. I got 29:54 and Sam right on my tail at 29:58. It was nice to get out there and feel the coolness of the lake and see the fish below us in that beautiful crystal clear water. It was a successful day!
It's awesome that we have another Catalina Crossing from a Utah swimmer since last summer's Catalina swim from James Jonsson.
Wes told me he wanted to do a long training swim that started very early in the morning on his birthday. I took the day off work and drove up the evening of July 4th and stayed in a campsite that his friend Mark bought for him.

I got up at 3:30 and met Wes at the Deer Creek boat ramp. For his birthday I gave him a bulk pack of light sticks which will come in handy for his Catalina crossing which will require at least a dozen. We got everything packed up and lit up and he made his way in the water. I didn't have a thermometer but the website said that the water temp was in the low 60s.

There was no wind, and it was a clear night. In fact prior to getting in I saw a star make its way overhead which I immediately recognized as the international space station and snapped a pic.
He wanted a drink every 15 minutes, which he must have programmed into his watch because he was the one to initiate the stop only a few seconds before the 15 minutes elapsed.

At 7am we met several of his friends at the boat ramp where they joined us. The all wore wetsuits, and man were they fast. I sensed about a 25% jump in the pace. Wes I'm sure really enjoyed the opportunity to draft. Unfortunately none of that will be available for the Catalina crossing, but it was a great chance to get a slight break and also increase the speed.

The sun was warming the air and the swimmers kept up their quick pace only stopping every 30 minutes for a regroup and quick drink break for Wes. At 10:30 we stopped at the boat ramp and picked up a couple more swimmers and made our way over to sailboat beach (just around the bend west of the boat ramp) where the swim ended.
It was cool to meet these young international triathletes and celebrate Wes' birthday together. We talked about a few of the various Catalina crossing topics. I'm betting Wes gets it done in about 10 hours. His pace was about a 28 minute mile. The reason we finished when we did was because we ended up waiting at various times at the boat ramp for additional swimmers to join in.

This was a fun experience, and again made me realize that kayaking these distances is quite a big deal too.
